Study Permit

A study permit allows you to study at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. It is important to know that with a study permit, you are often permitted to work while attending school. You may also qualify for a full-time work permit once you graduate.

The study permit is usually valid for the length of your program of study.

Eligibility Requirements:

Be enrolled in a designated learning institution (DLI).

Possess enough income to cover your:

  • Tuition fees
  • Living expenses
  • Return transportation

Prove to an immigration officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

You may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit if you recently graduated from an eligible Canadian designated learning institution (DLI). A PGWP would allow you to work in Canada and gain valuable Canadian work experience. If you obtain skilled Canadian work experience in NOC types 0, A or B through the PGWP, you may qualify for permanent residence in Canada. Eligibility Requirements:

Obtain a transcript and an official letter from the DLI, as confirmation that you met the requirements to complete your program of study.

Maintain full-time student status in Canada during each applicable academic session.

Complete an academic, vocational or professional training program at an eligible DLI institution in Canada, that is at least 8 months in length and leads to a degree, diploma or certificate.
